You’re a zebra if you are somebody suffering from a rare, chronic illness, such as I am from EDS. This comes from the old saying aimed at new doctors, when you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras

But sometimes it’s a zebra, many can attest to that, and it’s why the average person with a chronic illness is misdiagnosed multiple times before, if they’re lucky, finally receiving the corrected diagnosis. This is where advocacy and awareness comes in to play. The more we can educate the public and the medical field about rare, chronic illnesses, the better the chance of getting help sooner and preventing suffering.

right now I’m working to establish an in person support group in my town to finally be able to meet other zebras face-to-face. I have a lot of support online, but that’s no replacement for a real life human being who understands what I go through on a daily basis once again, self advocacy at work!
